There are many possible spellings for this word among the Mennonites.
1 tsp sugar 1/2 cup warm water 1 tbsp yeast 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup water 1 tbsp sugar 2 tsp baking powder 1-2 cups apples (some like raisins try any fruit!) 3 egg yolks 3 egg whites 3 cups flour
Prepare the yeast (first three ingrediants) and set aside while the yeast does its thing.
Combine the milk, water sugar, egg yolks,baking powder and fruit. Mix in the yeast and then fold in the egg whites. Stir in the flour to make a heavy batter. Set aside to double (in volume). Deep fry by dropping spoonfulls carefully into hot oil.
Serve with a sprinkling of icing sugar and/or cinnamon.
